Welcome to DSLRs.co.uk!
A digital single-lens reflex camera (digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera that uses a mechanical mirror system to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera.
DSLRs.co.uk aims to be a useful resource for amateur and professional photographers, and non-photographers, interested in Digital SLRs and related accessories. We hope to provide this information in an easy-to-read and accessible manner, and to provide unbiased reviews and user experiences for each model.
DSLRs are often preferred by professional still photographers for a number of reasons. Primarily because they allow an accurate framing preview close to the moment of exposure, and because DSLRs offer the versatility of being able to utilise a variety of interchangeable lenses. Many professionals also prefer DSLRs for their larger or higher resolution sensors, when compared to most compact digital cameras.
However, Digital SLR sales have also been on the rise due to the upgrades of non-professional users, as more consumers are moving on to their second or third digital camera. The prices of entry-level DSLRs have recently been more and more comparable with mid to upper-level compact digital cameras. A DSLR is more responsive than a compact, allowing the user to take more photos, more quickly; and it is more flexible, allowing the photographer to change or customise the lens, or to use accessories such as flashguns and remote controls.

Entry-level SLRs are designed for people who have been used to pocket-sized compact cameras, and so the manufacturers have kept them as small and light as possible. However, despite this, DSLR manufacturers are keen to include all the electronics and features of the higher-end models. This means that almost every model now features live view (the ability to compose a photograph live on the screen), and large lcd screens to aid composition.
It’s important to remember that the purchase of a DSLR is often only the first step in having a complete photographic arsenal. Many users are content to stick with the camera as supplied, but many will at some point want to consider upgraded lenses and other accessories. These items are discussed here.
